Project details
This is a design which celebrates the age and significance of The Old Vic, whilst remaining true to the theatres vision; inclusive / unintimidating / surprising. This tension is played out through the scheme with an adventurous composition of new elements weaved into the existing.

An appropriately grand arrival space and Lobby Bar is enhanced with an oversized arched mirror, referencing the original west elevation of arches designed by Rudolphe Cabanel.

The unpredictable use of highly textured natural clay plaster to wall and ceiling surfaces is juxtaposed with traditional architectural elements and has been used throughout the project as a raw, urban finish. This gritty texture is contrasted with block neutral Little Greene greys to mimic The Old Vic’s external rebranding.

Taking inspiration from the auditorium itself, a sumptuous red velvet drape, designed by Rob Howell, has been inspired by the threatres seats. This creates a well-worn but richly coloured focal point, produced by the theatre itself.

The basement Penny Bar is defined with its deep red coloured flooring. A floor to ceiling translucent steel - glass screen is the primary organisational element about which oak, leather, and playful pastel pink furniture is arranged.

Consistent with the scheme at large, a series of newly configured bathrooms are a textural feast of concrete, raw textured clay plaster, bespoke glossy wine coloured Little Greene paint, leather by Bill Amberg, and tarnished bronze.
